The Importance of Graphic Design to Your Business

While a number of small business owners know why great design is so valuable, some do not realize this. Even if you are a newbie or veteran in business, this list can be beneficial.

Sadly, smaller businesses don’t give importance to professional design work. In fact, when they go through financial issues, they cut down on the creative budget, which is but natural. The resources of many small businesses are limited, and though they like a professional looking website and logo, as well as credible marketing collateral, they are not ready to pay the required professional fees.

They would rather hire poorly trained person like a marketing assistant to create a DIY design. Or else, they would search online for affordable options. Whoever they choose will most likely make them disappointed with the outcome.

Therefore, when the time comes that you feel skeptical about spending for great graphic design, keep these six things in mind:

First impressions last.

Remember that you could either make it or break it with a first impression. No matter if it is your site or logo, potential clients can immediately judge a business in a matter of seconds depending on visual appeal on its own. A graphic design with high quality makes your business more credible, making it priceless. Even if you have exceptional products/services, if your site is poorly designed, it is less likely for visitors to stay long on your site or engage any further.

Branding lets your company be easily remembered.

Solid graphic design lets your branding be consistent in all visual aspects of your business. When you hire a professional graphic design artist, he will make sure that all colors, fonts plus images are accurate. For this reason, when visitors land on your site, they will experience the same thing as reading your business brochure. In a way, it is sort of alliteration, wherein your business becomes easy to recognize and remember. In addition, consistency boosts professionalism.

Creativity can make a difference.

One of the things that all businesses have in common is competition. To give them an edge over their competitors, they have to be competitive when it comes to quality, price, customer service and even offer something different. Creativity has the ability to let a business stand above the rest of competition.

The visual communication plan of a company has many purposes, one of which is making your business unique.

A good design has the ability to convert.

It is nice to have a beautiful website. It is even better to have a visual appealing website that makes income. Design is not only about creating something beautiful. It should be effective in capturing and encouraging visitors. A properly designed website can persuade visitors to take action such as clicking “buy”. When a brochure is well-crafted, it persuades viewers to turn the pages. A professional graphic design is capable of delivering measurable outcome for small businesses.

Investing more can eventually save time and money.

Businesses that do not take graphic design seriously right from the start will most likely experience a design overhaul sooner or later. This can even happen once or more. Quality design lasts for a long time. Investing in professional graphic design is just like spending many times on inferior design. Furthermore, changing the image of your business wastes time and could hurt your brand.

The Health, Political, Educational and Economic Roles of The Graphic Artist

The Graphic artist is a visual communicator whose roles is quintessential in the areas of health, politics, education and economic advancement of a society. These unique duties are clearly discussed to show how effective any artist taking up this role can perform his responsibilities in the society.

Health Roles

The health personnel and workers are identified through the dress that they wore. The various medicines that they administer are nicely kept in well-designed packages to protect them from spoilage. The hospitals and clinics where patients are cared for are a product of contemporary African architecture. The hazardous chemicals, safety tools, and equipment used by the health personnel in discharging their duties are clearly labeled by him to avoid wrong applications and injury. Comprehensive instructions on how to use the medicine given at the health centres are clearly written on the attractive labels attached to their containers designed by him.

The health education which involves sensitizing the general public on deadly diseases and how to prevent them is done through communication tools such as posters, banners, flyers, and handbills etc. The locations of these health centres are made easy through signboards and billboards.

Political Roles

The activities of the various political parties in the country are made possible through the use of works by the Graphic designer. For instance, the emblems and logos with distinguishing colour schemes that help us to distinguish one political party from the other are as a result of him. Moreover, each of the parties makes the general public know of their plans for the nation as well as their campaigns through the use of posters, banners, signboards signposts, flyers, handbills and billboards which are all works of art. What about the locations to the various party offices? Is it not as a result of products done by the Graphic artist? In addition, the various T-shirts, caps, and other paraphernalia that party activists and supporters put on during political rallies and meetings are all products of art. In fact, without the products by him, political activities cannot be carried out.

Educational Roles

Teaching and learning activities in the various educational institutions are effectively carried out by the use of visual communication products. The uniforms and costumes that are worn by students that bear the emblems and logos designed by him help us to identify students of the various educational institutions. The numerous colourful and illustrative teaching aids that assist greatly in teaching and learning activities. School programs and locations of schools are broadcasted and made known to the general public through products such as banners, signboards, posters, and billboards. Other products like books and other stationery materials affect the teaching and learning processes directly. Announcements, school programs, and general information are made known to students through graphic communication tools such as posters, banners, handbills etc.

Economic Roles

Graphic design products are traded to earn income. People invest in the collections of works of art. The field of Graphic design also offers various employment avenues for members of the society such as Book Illustrator, Poster designer, Package designer, Cartoonist, Graphic animator, Stage designer, Printmaker etc. More importantly is the role Graphic design plays in the success of other trades. It helps in the marketing of products and services. Locations and other relevant information of firms and companies, as well as the products they produce, are nicely depicted on signboards and billboards. Posters, handbills, and flyers assist in the promotion of sales of products.

Cottage industries that help in reducing the unemployment numbers in the country are promoted and preserved through productions in Graphic design. Setting up a cottage industry in the area does not require a lot of capital when compared to other sectors like medicine, agriculture etc. With the acquired manual skills, together with few locally manufactured tools and raw materials, the Graphic designer can produce several creative works that he can sell to make a living in his own house. This helps in reducing the unemployment rates in the country.

Graphic Design Program Tips

You’ve decided you want to start your own graphics design business, and now you are faced with different paths to take to reach your goals. Deciding on a software package to use for your designs doesn’t have to be a big hurdle for you. There are some great options out there no matter what your budget is that will help you bring your design visions to life.

What will your designs primarily encompass? Will you be doing print work for your clients, such as business brochures, business cards, etc.? Will your focus be primarily on online design for company logos, web design, etc.? The kind of designing you are planning to do could have a bearing on which software program you choose, but in reality most of them will be great for all of the above. Specializing in one area will help you get a solid reputation in one area of design, but branching out to different areas will maximize your potential for profit. Let’s take a brief look at a few of the programs available and their approximate cost.

1. Photoshop – Most everyone has heard of this program, but many people think it’s just for manipulating and editing photos. Well it is much more than that. Did you know you can upload video to Photoshop and edit it? Most people don’t realize the power of this program. You can design anything from t-shirts to logos using Photoshop’s full featured array of tools. The one thing Photoshop does the best, however, is still photos. Photoshop uses pixel based images, and if you needed to enlarge a pixel based image you will see a blur effect. If you are planning to do a lot of images that you need in different sizes Photoshop may not be the program to go with. It is currently priced at $699, but if you do some shopping you can save a little. Also, Adobe has a student discount available you could take advantage of to save a bunch. It doesn’t matter if you are a student or if you have a child who is in college, high school, middle school, or elementary, as long as you can prove it you qualify for the education discount.

2. Illustrator – Adobe Illustrator uses vector images which can be re-sized with no loss of definition. It is much better to use Illustrator if a client needs a logo or image in varying sizes. It has a similar layout to Photoshop but they are much different programs. Illustrator, like Photoshop, can be a little intimidating to the new user, and very few people use every feature in either program. Illustrator is great for t-shirt design, web graphics, and does fantastic with print graphics thanks to the ability to use the CMYK color spectrum. Adobe Illustrator is similarly priced to Photoshop currently at $599, and the education discount could be applied to this program as well.

3. Adobe Web Premium – The Adobe Web Premium suite offers Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver (website design program) and many other powerful programs grouped together in a massive package. This runs around $1500 – $1700 but you can again apply the education discount and get this product for around $699!

4. CorelDRAW – CorelDRAW is a less expensive alternative to Photoshop and Illustrator. It is a full featured design program just like Adobe’s products, but priced less at around $369.

5. GIMP – GIMP is quickly gaining in popularity not only for its powerful editing features but because it is an Open Source Program. What that means to you is it’s totally FREE!

I would recommend downloading trial versions of Adobe’s products and trying them out to see what the most expensive and powerful options offer. If you were to then try CorelDRAW or GIMP you could see which features are absent and if you even need those to complete your designs. All of these programs have numerous tutorials online available for training, so whichever one you choose you will have plenty of support to learn the program. There are plenty of great, low-cost options available for you in graphic design programs.
