Nowadays, it’s possible to create graphic novels very fast and publish them almost immediately. With sites like Amazon and apps like iBooks, you can get your work to readers worldwide while earning money with your novels.

So let’s review the 8 basic steps on how to make your very first graphic novel. In our case, we will create a photonovel or a novel made with photographs.

1. Turn your ideas into a script

This is essentially the backbone of your work. Make sure you develop a very good script with a solid story. There are many ways on how to develop powerful stories with deep meanings, but the key elements to keep in mind are:

  • Know your subject or research it thoroughly
  • Convey a universal message with your story
  • Keep the story simple, few characters, text and locations

2. Locations

Once your script is ready, you can now focus on searching for locations. Since you are doing a simple story, the number of locations can be very few, if not just a single location. It’s very important when dealing with locations to think about the mood of your story and see if they match what you are looking for.

3. Actors

You can invite friends to participate in your project but always keeping in mind that they should be consistent with the main features of your characters. If you go professional, find a local acting agency and browse for the actors that match your criteria and needed experience. Meet them prior to hiring them to know them better and figure out if they are indeed what you are looking for.

4. Storyboard

Sketch a graphic sequence of your story, also known as storyboard. The main purpose of the storyboard is to have a graphic guide of each shot, depicting framing, composition, movement and the general sequence of the story. Finally, develop a shot list.

5. Equipment & Props

For a photonovel you can use your phone camera or rent a professional DSLR plus lenses and lights to achieve crisp images and create atmospheres. Think about clothing and props; keep it simple again.

6. Production

Program a schedule for all team members of your project. Use your shot list as a guide for the work to be done in each session and keep good track of time.

7. Post-production

Make your own templates with Photoshop or use Comic Life. Fine-tune each photo and correct color, contrast, brightness, saturation, etc.

8. Prepare for Amazon and iBooks

Turn your novel into an epub file. This format works well for both platforms. Search online for tools on how to convert files into epub format.

A copyright is a type of intellectual property that protects the maker of an original, novel and creative work against duplication of his effort. The quandary is that copyrights which are not officially registered are difficult to protect lawfully if someone else tries to steal the idea; so copyright owners enroll them to further protect their creations.

My purpose for answering these basic questions was to clarify the ambiguous concepts occupying the minds of up and coming graphic designers.

Best Graphic Designing Company

A picture is worth a thousand words” it is said, and rightly so! The very first thing that catches an eye is a picture before words and whenever someone hears of a brand name usually the first thing that comes to their mind is its logo. A potent graphic can be very impactful and make a very lasting impression on the mind.

A graphic design is a form of visual communication. A human brain is evolved to decipher visual form of communication faster and can retain such visuals better and longer. Written communication requires learning and takes time to communicate and usually does not retain long enough. People usually do not read all that they see, but if the Design is eye-catching enough then it might make an impression enough to make them read or even without a single word, the idea can be communicated with just the IMG design.

If you wish to advertise then a graphic expression can get the idea of the product across or if you have a company then a logo can become the identity of your brand. A graphic can be used in advertising, to create a company logo, company brochure, pamphlets, leaflets, posters, standees, printing and stationary and even on a website.

Getting your graphic designed can be a very important decision and should not be taken trivially. You must consider getting it done from professional than doing it yourself as since they do it day in and day out, they are generally better than most lay persons. Plus there are far more things to consider when it comes to graphic designing, like not using deliberately or by accident a design which has already been used and registered or trademarked. Infringing on intellectual property (IP) is a punishable offence! The design must also consider the product, brand and company and also the target audience. Thus whenever you seek the service of some professional Photoshop, make sure you spend enough time with them and explain every intricate detail to make sure the artist completely understands and does justice to the product and the target audience understands it easily and makes a lasting impression.

Getting the graphic designed by professionals saves you the time and efforts and is usually more polished and of greater quality than what a lay person is capable of creating. Plus, a lay person might not be conversant with the copyright laws and the registered and trademarked designs and might accidentally infringe upon someone’s intellectual property (IP).
